Shawn lost his daughter to Ewing's Sarcoma, a progressive form of pediatric cancer, in May 2020. Since September the year before, he had been asking Guardians to wear gold for the month to honor her memory and raise awareness. His words stuck with me: no monetary gains, just a supportive gesture asked by one dad to others. That is the kind of thing that makes this community feel different.

When Shawn posted again, asking his fellow dads and Guardians to join him and go gold for September, the response was beautiful. Twitch streamers like AnneMunition and Datto picked it up and shared it with a wider audience. The post eventually reached the Destiny Fashion subreddit, where Guardians started posting golden outfits nonstop. I remember scrolling through those posts and seeing Titans with gold-plated shoulders, Warlocks in shimmering robes, and Hunters who looked like they had just robbed a Vault of Golden Age treasure. Nobody was doing it for stats. Nobody was doing it for a title. They were doing it because one dad asked, and because kids with cancer deserve more than a moment of silence. They deserve action, even if that action is just changing a shader. 💛

In 2026, the game has changed a lot. We have new episodes, new loot, new ways to chase power, and probably a dozen things I am behind on. But the Go Gold tradition still fits perfectly. Destiny is a game about light in the darkness, and childhood cancer is one of the darkest things a family can face. So every September, I open my Collections, pick a gold shader, and remind myself that the person behind the controller matters more than the gear score.

Fortnite hosted a Destiny crossover event where you could grab skins for certain Destiny characters and even play on a recreated Crucible map in Fortnite Creative. Javelin-4 was rebuilt by Team PWR using only existing assets in Fortnite, and they did a hell of a job. I love that. It shows how far a simple request can travel. One dad posts in a Facebook group, streamers share it, Reddit turns it into a fashion show, and suddenly people in a completely different game are running around a Destiny map. That is community. That is what I want more of in 2026.

So here is my small ask, Guardian to Guardian: if you play Destiny 2 this September, go gold. It does not cost you anything. It does not require a raid clear or a flawless card. It just requires a shader and a little bit of heart. Take a screenshot, post it in your clan chat, or share it in the Destiny Fashion community. If you see another Guardian in gold, send them a wave. Maybe they are remembering someone. Maybe they are supporting a friend. Maybe they just like the look. All of those reasons are good enough.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is about more than awareness, though. It is about remembering kids like Shawn's daughter, who did not get to grow up. It is about the families who keep going. It is about the researchers and doctors fighting Ewing's Sarcoma and other pediatric cancers. I cannot cure cancer by putting a gold shader on my Warlock. But I can refuse to forget.
